I ended up getting the SL-Aqua Nature Soil. It's pretty good, not much ammonia, and buffers my PH to about 5.8-5.9 which is pretty good for PRL shrimps that I will be keeping. Overall, great product so far

Food is working out pretty well. They were $10 a bag for 40g. TDS wise, havent noticed too much change. I hover about 150 to 160 each week. Once it hits 160, I normally do a 20% WC

If you really want to keep your seiryu, you can seal them so they won’t leech kH into the water.

You can find her on Facebook. She is a proven PRL breeder and are extremely nice. She has some that ranges from $20 a piece up to $100+ I think. She has the Hafferman lineage, and had at least 3-4 generations.

GH at 6 is fine.... they range from 4-6. At the end of the day, it's whatever works best for you. I normally try to keep the GH the same as the place I purchased it from, so it's less stress. So, if the person I bought the shrimp from has a GH of 5, i try to keep it at 5 as well.

It's also possible the shrimp died due to stress, the older they are, the harder it is for them to adapt to new environments.

Are you using RODI water and remineralizing it? Whats your TDS?

No, but doing water changes improperly will.

Shrimp don't like quick changes in water parameters, especially most Caridina, so as hardy as shrimp are there some things that can upset them rather quickly.  When you're changing water it's best to do 10-15% water changes, match the parameters as closely as you can (Temp, pH, GH, KH, TDS) & drip the water in.

It's also been explained to me by a very successful breeder here in the U.S. another way.  I'm paraphrasing here...   ...Shrimp NEED water changes to stay strong and healthy.  When you first get your shrimp start out slowly changing out 5-8% of your water every week or two.  Your shrimp are weak and not at their best at this point, you need to be careful with them and not change your parameters too quickly because they are so weak during this time.  Gradually up the frequency and the volume of your water changes.  As you do this your shrimp will become stronger & healthier, you can then continue to up the frequency and volume of your water changes (still trying to match the parameters as closely as you can).  Over time your shrimp will become healthier, stronger & more adaptable to changes in water parameters.  More like Viking Shrimp!

From experience, using ice cubes and frozen water bottles is a bad idea. It will cause uneven temps. It's  better to use a mini fan. Here is what I use:

Something small and cheap. Using something like this actually can help drop temp 4-5 degrees.... downside is, it evaporates water a lot faster, which will require you to top off the system more.

Depends. They breed based on how much food they consume. If you have a lot of food and waste in the tank, they can breed like crazy. Most people say, as long as you're able to control how much food you fed your shrimps, their breeding should be ok

I normally get it from "The Shrimp tank" but it looks like they are out. I've ordered from Jungle Aqua Shrimp before for other things and they are great.

Memphis118 got a reaction from Valek in RO/DI system cost
In my opinion, if you're only spending $4.50 a month, it might be cheaper to go that route.

I purchased a 4 stage RODI unit from BRS that cost me around $180 (could be cheaper during sale times), and with the filters given, I've gotten over 500 gallons from it, without changing out the filters. Filter replacements if things run out, ranged from 30-60 dollars I believe, if you get it from BRS.

Filter life span also depends on the water going in from your tap, how high the TDS is, etc etc. It is determined by how much the RODI unit needs to work to get the TDS down to zero. Lucky for me, the local water here isn't as bad as other areas.

Currently I have a canister filter in my 17g tank. I was planning on adding a air pump to the tank, and debating on installing it with a dual sponge filter. Thoughts? Good? Not needed? What would you do

Sounds good. I ended up adding a dual sponge filter on top of my existing canister. More surface space for them to pick at, extra filtration, who can argue with that.

So I finally did the final touches to the tank, and added my Auto Top off unit over from my old salt water tank. My Apex system is now fully updated, and entire tank can be monitored / controlled through my phone / browser.
