Looks like a corner box filter. You could add a double sponge for cheap, and it would be more beneficial as a place to graze IMHO.

Increasing neo hardiness has always been my number one goal. The breeding projects were icing on the cake. :-)

Finally! Berried Nessie.

@ohmiko They're one of the strains I created after years of work. :-) I have to admit though, they are the weirdest strain I've ever worked with! Their genetic rules just don't seem to follow anything I've seen before. Fluctuation of color, different grades in the same batch of berries- In my experiments, even Nessie x Wild will wind up mostly Nessies by 2nd generation. This is the only strain I've heard of that is dominant over wild! -

This is the part that gets weird. Some blue will change to green, a small percentage stay blue, some greens change to blue with the lights off and back again with light on. Almost impossible to tell which is which. The nice thing is Nessie x Nessie = Nessie, so the green coloration carries on. -
Blue velvet 'blue/red' rili project
Soothing Shrimp replied to Kat's topic in Genetics and Selective Breeding
BBRR can be encouraged by RR x BR more easily than RR x BV. The challenge you have is that the more intense the blue tissue, the less red pigment, and visa versa. My own opinion is that they may be tied together, which is why it is so hard to get an intensity from both. True BV are not selected from little pigmented RR, though it is a common misconception. BV have a gene that causes the red to actually fade away leaving a blue shrimp. It is recessive though, so if you mix BV with any other blue color, it will get lost. Now, having said that- there are lots of genotypes out there now that are calling themselves BV. -
Hi Kat. Looks as if the shrimp have the phenotype of carbons. Carbons can express coloration in lots of ways. Those that are not pigmented still carry carbon coloration in their genes.

Anyone Ever see Color Morphs in Marmorkrebs?
Soothing Shrimp replied to rodbigelow's topic in Crays and Other Inverts
There is also the factor of light and background. Babies that grow up with less light and a lighter background become more pale. I don't know how well they can control this because even when switched to a higher light/darker background they tend to stay pale. I also noticed before a molt they'll get bluer. However the number one reason I found for blue coloration was Spirulina and Astaxanthin. This is where it gets tricky. Although marms are clones, not every marm has the same genes working for color. This means feeding one marm Spirulina or Astaxanthin may affect color, while another is not affected. All will change back to wild coloration though if the food is switched out. -
Yeah. Not as aggressive as alleni for instance, but still predatory.

Thanks ShrimpP! Always great to see friends again! :-) I pretty much got out of shrimping about the same time filming started. I did get some cards/TB, but to be honest-not my thing. They are beautiful, no doubt about that- but my passion still lay with neos. No idea why. So, now I'll be starting up my neo rack again little by little. Looking for a day job, so my neo collection may take longer collecting than I would like, but I'll get there again. After all, I still have the equipment- even if they do need cleaning.
-
LOL You are so funny mosspearl. :-) But yeah. I got fed up with the phenotype/genotype misnamings, so I had to leave shrimping for awhile to clear my head. I ended up getting some cards/tb, but it just couldn't take the place of my neo shrimp rack I had before. When you have a certain connection with a type of shrimp...well, I guess that doesn't go away. So, I'll be building my neo rack back up again. Bit by bit. :-)

stupid sponge filter suction cups!!
Soothing Shrimp replied to sarah's topic in Filtration, lighting and other equipment
Yeah, sometimes biofilm will be too slippery. I have to admit though, one of the best solutions I've read here is to silicone a small piece of tile to the bottom, and it will hold it down. Then you don't have to worry about suction cups at all. -
I'm back after taking some months for shooting film. I've been out of the neo game for about 3-4 months. Any new types pop up while I was gone?
-
Back again. The web series is now in post production and I can get back to my shrimping again. Looks like a ton of info has been added since I was gone. Love this place! It figures after I say bye bye to all my neos, that I feel the desire to get back into them again. LOL Isn't that always the way? Cards are absolutely beautiful, but my heart still resides with neos. No idea why. It just does. *shrugs* Unfortunately all tanks have been neglected, so I'll be working on getting those back into shape again. *sigh* Such is my life. So anyway, hi again!

It's like anything else I suppose. Whatever the fad is at the given time determines interest. At one time the interest for neos was like cards or TaiTiBee are now. A new neo type could fetch $100 ea with only fems sold. Now, the going rate for a new strain is $25 ea retail on the high side, and around $15 ea when hobbyists are involved. One day I would love to see own some from someone who recreated the strain.
