  1. Not yet. I still have a 1000g jar to go through! LOL
  2. Rili is the classic look. Pigment on head and tail. Rili: Splotched is kinda like dalmatian dogs. You never know what each litter will bring: Splotched:
  3. I just went through a large jar of SS gh/kh for my neos this year and figured I would write up what my feelings are. Keep in mind, this is only my opinion and should be taken as such. heh SS gh/kh actually uses more product to remineralize. 1 scoop to 2g as opposed to 1 scoop to 3g with SS gh+ SS gh/kh is harder to dissolve, whereas SS gh+ dissolves very fast. SS gh/kh didn't always give me the same TDS per scoop. I'm guessing this is because it incorporates 2 different powders to create 2 different things: gh and kh. These ratios can be "off" as the powder is used up. I saw less breeding with SS gh/kh. Now, having said that, it could be lots of other things involved too. Extra long winter, TDS change, etc. So this may or may not have played a role in it. In short, I'm going back to SS gh+. One jar for all my species of shrimp. Jar lasts longer, almost instant dissolving, TDS is roughly the same per scoop, and already since I've been using it I've noticed berries again- although as noted, this may be due to other reasons as well. Other opinions welcomed. These are just my very unscientific observations.
  4. I also find that the hair algae grows in dead water movement spots. The places with water movement is less likely to have hair algae. high5, perhaps add a bubbler in the spot where the hair algae is?
  5. Che3f, I appreciate your comments! Each person is different and what works for one person may or may not work for another. I think this is a great example of that.
  6. I thought about making a poll, however I'm more interested in the conversation of people's opinions. No opinion is "right" or "wrong" on this. It's simply how an individual feels about the var. Some questions for conversation: Do you like Rili or Splotched shrimp? Would you consider keeping them? Which do you like better? RIli or Splotched (non-culled)? Or would you not think about keeping them at all? Too much work? Ugly? IN short, what are your thoughts?
  7. The glass shrimp catcher's drawback that I see is if you get something unwanted such as bottom crud, it gets transferred too. Also with a net, the water goes through it and pressure keeps the shrimp in while lifting the net out. Seems to me that currents may happen in the glassware since water doesn't go through while taking it out and may help the shrimp to escape. (?) Never had any experience with them, so I'll be interested in reviews of people who try them.
  8. My shrimp go gaga for Mulberry leaves. Too expensive to feed for me though, because $$$ would be gone in 1 feeding with so many tanks! LOL
  9. Ron, I've often wondered about that experiment.
  10. I have a small portable one, and it worked fine. Keep in mind it will condense quite a bit because the air pocket space will be gone. I did smaller than 1/2 cup and I have enough powder for years now. LOL Just need them big enough to take the food processor flake and they'll take off from there.
  11. Supposedly easier clean up from the bare side, more biofilm, and easier netting.
  12. Coffee grinder works it into powder. It will also chop cichlid pellets into powder. After that, use a small portable food processor to chop into small flakes. I buy big bags of Omega One Freshwater Flakes (giant flakes,) and chop them into small flakes with my "Family Chef" food processor. I only use flakes for my fish and Malawa though.
  13. Now past 25,000 posts with useful information by helpful members! Thank you folks for making this forum a success!
  14. The shrimp smell the chitin and think someone has molted. It also works sometimes to trigger molts, which is why it can be dangerous.
  15. Thanks guys. Unless I take the net off and try making it from toole or something, I'm lost too.
  16. Interesting. Since I have had my ph meter set up and running continuously, I noticed that as the temperature goes higher, the ph goes lower. (I have very little kh in my crystal tank.) I just checked online to find out if this is indeed the case, and it appears so: "The most basic chemical reaction affecting pH is the dissociation of water: H2O --> H+ + OH- Over the temperature range 0 to 60 degrees Celsius [32F - 140F] , this reaction becomes more favorable. This means that neutral water will contain a higher concentration of H+ as the temperature increases, so the pH will decrease. "
  17. Nice find. I'll be following this thread.
  18. Besides viagra, I need ideas on how to make 3D nets stiff again. I have a couple that I have used for a long period of time, but they collapse now. At the cost of $15 per net, anyone have any ideas how to make the net stiff again?
  19. 3-D nets are the only ones I'll use now. I guess I've been spoiled, but I don't have to worry about shrimp being injured during transfer. I prefer the extension 3D nets because I can lengthen them or shorten them according to size of tank or under shelves. I know I know, use a different net per tank, but I don't have a zillion dollars to spend on nets, so I just have a handful. Honestly though, 3D nets (extendable or not) are awesome. Once you try them, you'll never go back!
  20. Watch for infection, obviously. I see you have the orange tail streak. Funny how those are so hard to breed out!
  21. OKay, please don't flame me- but I thought I'd try an unusual trade... Halloween is coming up, and if you can't use this this year, then perhaps next: Bought brand NEW in 2007, sat in storage and NEVER USED- This is the ORIGINAL Boris with the 10 voice changing synthesizer mode, and batteries that insert into the bottom of the skull. Not the later model Boris skull with 4 syth changer and batteries in the top (although that was cool too!) Talk into the microbone, and the red LED in each eye flash with each syllable, and mouth opens with each syllable as well. Still in new box so if anyone wants to give it as a gift, they can do that as well! Skull comes with microbone, crisp clean original instructions, and batteries. I can mail out priority as soon as a deal is made. Asking $75 in trade for shrimp. What kind of shrimp? Make an offer to me in pm. I'm not super picky!
