  1. Yepper. It actually adds a little MORE ammonia, but the bacteria added eats it up and rapidly reproduces to take care of the ammonia being produced. It can significantly reduce your cycling time.
  2. Hey, I'm in for every month if all I have to do is buy a virtual ticket to win shrimp! Cool idea that the seller gets pd and the rest goes to the site. I'm HUGE on win-win situations. And this wins for the seller, raffle buyers and the forum- as the money would be used for maintenance and upgrades! Heck, we don't even pay for memberships yet!
  3. "Did you bake it just to dry and sanitize it for storage?" Yepper. Kill off any snails, nasties, etc. and dry it. "Is the sand as good as Ada for plants or is it limited to its buffering ability?" I don't know if it is as good for plants, since I'm not a plant guy really. "If there is no ammonia leach how soon is it safe for shrimp after setup?" Pretty darn Safe. Give it time to adjust the ph and in they can go. (Now take that with a grain of salt. What works for me, may not work for you.) This last time I let it sit three days and in the shrimp went. Now, keep in mind to do it right you still want time for biofilm to build in your tank...
  4. I use tenners almost exclusively. I like them.
  5. Most colors can be bred true over time. I wonder if many people are working on it since all varieties are accepted? Seems to me codes could be unlocked with homogenous TBs.
  6. I know what you mean. I'm not a patient person either. You can always use safestart to jump stat your tank.

  8. I think, in general, we tend to go with what has worked for us before. For me it has been the sand, so as of yet I have no reason to switch. Of course, I also don't do a nice thick 2" substrate. I've just done one bag in a tenner- and that is way under 1." So far it has worked well, but who knows what the future holds?
  9. Has anyone bred a true breeding strain of TB var, yet? Ie. KK x KK = KK
  10. Yeah, but you still don't want to do that- or at least I wouldn't. I don't want to risk freezing my acct or being shut down. I've heard horror stories. Granted- I don't pay taxes on what I sell on shrimp stuff because I don't make that much, but I *do* use paypal a lot to receive and buy. Besides, don't they still take out the percentage? Just out of YOUR acct and not the sellers if you do friend?
  11. I only used 1 bag of Aqua sand in my tenner, but I am using remin RO. It lasted so well for me that when I broke down my previous tank, I spread the sand out on a pan and baked it in the oven until dry, then stored it in a 2 liter bottle until I used it again recently.
  12. This should be the Karma thread.
  13. $1.50 per ticket would leave $1.16 after paypal fees. $2.00 would be $1.65 after paypal fees.
  14. That's what I use for my crs. (I only have 5). No ammonia leaching and brings down the ph well.
  15. Depends what shrimp, and as for food how big your tank is. The smaller the tank, the easier to is to foul the water. IN general if you aim for between 1-3 hours for food to be gone, you are good. Snowflake is good because you can just leave it in there. For cherries that TDS change wouldn't be a problem. For more sensitive shrimp, I've had breeders tell me that 40TDS change in one day is all they do.
  16. The smaller the tank, the more need for increased wc, methinks.
  17. I just bought a bunch of supplies from brineshrimpdirect.com Let's hope this works! heh
  18. I emptied and cleaned (3) 2.5g tanks for this purpose now, and bought a shallow plastic container to place the eggs into. I was just notified that the eggs were sent out today and are ready to hatch. Guess it is time for me to buy some brine shrimp eggs now, too...
  19. The larger tank someone buys, the more in items they have to purchase. I think they sell the tanks as a loss leader. makes sense.
  20. Nah. I figured I deserved it. heh
  21. Well, even if that happens, you have the start of two strains now.
  22. We all have to help each other!
  23. Don't get too excited yet. heh Wait for it to mature first to see if the color changes or stays. Most any time you read about blue in cardinals it is from them being stressed, however also there is almost nothing really written about them- so it may or may not change as it gets older. It is neat looking though.
