I was or still am a stay at home dad . I raised two girls now 12 and 15 and ran a very successful online internet business from the house until I sold it.
I enjoy Kava that you can get in a tea bag form once in a while for stress relief and I really enjoy drinking Kava with local Fijians when I go to Fiji. It taste like crappy muddy peppery water but man I sure love relax state and best sleep you will ever have with no hangover or side effects the next day if you dont over do it.

Vpier reacted to Citycode01 in too many males?
    Hi guys,
Last night I was a witness of quite a brutal scene in my tank.
Everything was fine in the begging. One of the large female mischling moulted and all population of males start to flying around look for her. She managed to escape without any problems. In a couple of hour I was going to check on her how she doing and I found her quite weak and out of energy , she barely escaping the males and then three males managed to got her in the corner and were trying to do he, they were very aggressive and pinching  her quite hard, I decided to separated her and gone for 5 minutes to get my breading box from the cupboard and when I got back it was too late, she was almost dead. when I took her out I noticed she had few legs missing, she had one large part of the shell missing and all antennas missing. She died in a few hours.
I've got a video about 1 min before I gone to get a breeding box, but I feel so guilty I didn't make it on time so I probably wouldn't upload it here, it's quite brutal if be honest.

I think normally shrimps quite armoured and that wouldn't be a problem except if they just freshly moult.
My question is do I have to reduce the males number in the tank because I think they are too many of them and females had a hard time when they moult? I think I only need like 1:4 male female ratio? Is this correct?

Vpier reacted to mayphly in Setting Up A Tank With An HMF Filter
I recently installed Hamburg Mattenfilters (HMF) into six 10 gallon tanks using 45ppi foam along with jetlifter tubes from Swiss Tropicals.
The foam blocks came pre cut 12 x 10 3/4" and the jetlifter tubes came pre assembled.
I like them them so much I thought I'd share with you how I installed them.

    Step 1.

I dry fitted the foam blocks inside of the tank and made sure it fit to my liking. My plan was to add bio-rings along with the heater and jetlifter tube behind the foam. Once I fit my foam I removed it and cut a hole in the top where I wanted my jetlifter tube to exit. I used the jetlifter tube to cut the hole aprox 1" from the top in the center of the foam. You can twist the JL tube into the foam to cut it. You'll end up with a nice perfect fit.

    Step 2.

I installed my tubing on to the JL (jetlifter) tube and placed the JL into the foam. Then I inserted the foam back into the tank. Make sure you have enough tubing attached to the JL to reach your air pump. Next I placed my tank up on it's end and slid my bio-rings in. If I tried to just drop my bio-rings in they would kick the bottom of the foam out. I also placed my heater in behind the foam at this point.

    Step 3.

I added my bacteria to the bottom of the tank before adding my substrate. I decided to use Mosura Old Sea Mud, Bacter AE and SL- Magic Powder.  I also sprinkled some of the powders behind the filter over my bio-rings. The bacteria will help cycle the tank.

** At the time of writing this I did use Bacter AE on the bottom of my tank with no ill effects to any of my shrimps. Since then it has been recommended not to do this.**

    Step 4.

I rinsed my substrate to remove any debris before adding it to my tank. There was a lot of wood shavings in my gravel along with some purple, pink and blue rocks. I decided to go with natural colored gravel. Once rinsed I added my substrate in front of the filter. I suppose if you wanted to you could even add some behind the filter but I chose not to.

    Step 5.

Fill the tank with water. Connect your airline tubing from the JL to your air pump and let it run. Now your ready to cycle your tank.

Does anyone else drink tea?  I've pretty much stopped coffee, and have become a tea drinker.

    I'm a newbie.

I'm going to start keeping a list of what I've tried and want to try.  heck, maybe if people are interested, we can swap tea bags and try them and see what we think.  A tea club so to speak.

    I've tried:

black w/earl grey- dark color, nice wake up tea in the morn.  Bold flavor which I like.  Not too crazy about the earl aftertaste.

black w/orange pekoe- I do like this one.  A bit of citrus which has a nice mellow aftertaste.

green- light color, not as bold flavor as I'd like, but still okay.

on my wish list so far to try is:

Ruby Shangri-La Tea- a deep red tea made from Thai hibiscus & butterfly blue pea flowers
Bluechai Blue Tea- a blue tea made from butterfly pea flowers and organic lemongrass.

I use two of the expensive 45gal super durable Rubbermaid trash cans as my reservoir I got from Home Depot. These are large square ones you see trash trucks lifting up. I had no reason to go into to the room where my RO unit and storage cans are last night (1am) but for some reason I did and my floor was covered in water.  Now this room is above my painted, dry walled garage and about 3-5 gal of water had dripped down the ceilings electrical socket and light socket into the garage, no damage.  I could hear water running out but couldnt tell which one was leaking due being next to each other and me panicking and freaking out,   so I drained both cans of perfectly remineralized ro water down the drain. The cans are black so it was hard to see what happened. Took them outside today and could see that the cans have seams in them where Im guessing they melt sections together because the seams are on the outside and inside.  So I filled them up and saw water leaking out one of the cans at the lowest seam near the bottom of the cans. I thought these trash cans where molded from one solid piece. This is not the case.  If I didnt go into the room that would have been an expensive mess.  So I dont trust the one that isnt leaking. Water has way of finding weakness and design flaws.
Today I went on amazon and ordered two 30gal blue high-density polyethylene lab pack drums designed and UN approved hazmat storage drums that can be used to store, transport, and dispose of small, intact containers of hazardous materials and help contain spills. The drum is made of blue HDPE (high-density polyethylene), which weighs less than steel, is resistant to dents, punctures, and certain chemicals, and may be incinerated. The drum is blow-molded for wall strength and thinness. Ultraviolet (UV) inhibitors minimize fading and discoloring. The lever-lock ring can be used to secure the lid to the drum. Full drums can be stacked up to three high.

Its is also food grade "Our plastic does not have any BPA in it. Our resin is FDA approved and is allowable for drinking water."

I dont think these will leak and they are cheaper ($45) than the rubbermaid and shipping is free.

I learned a very important thing last night, trash cans are for holding trash not water for long periods of time.

Wife slept through the whole thing and has no idea I was up most of the night. She would have been upset. You cant even tell it happened. Good thing the paint in the garage is a darker color.

I chose the square ones due to fitting in the area better and taking less space. Hard lesson to learn but I got lucky and for some reason went into the room when I had no reason to do so.

Im thinking UN/DOT hazmat approved containers that can be stacked three high will hold up.

I use a sponge on the intake to prevent shrimp from getting sucked in, but also use a hydro-sponge filter in addition to my canister filter which is a ehiem 2211. New tanks will have an HMF and Im thinking about putting the canister intake behind the HMF and using my NAG adjustable outlet to dissipate flow. You can never have enough filtration.

I use  two of them, they work but the 15min fading isnt what you think it is. It will dim very slowly and its hard to notice then all of a sudden its off. I wouldn't spend the extra money. If I had to do it over again I would go with a much cheaper timer.
