Vpier got a reaction from TomCruise in CO2 and daily pH fluctuations/cycles
You get your water from Horsetooth Res. which is piped from Grandby Res. and my water came from Grandy.

Vpier reacted to eozen81 in Taiwan Shrimp Tank (84 Liters)
Hi guys,
Update after long time. I continued selective breeding (on a very amateur level) and had these black guys on the video.

Vpier reacted to Soothing Shrimp in Odd shrimp behavior
It could be they are getting "goodies" off your filter to eat.

Vpier reacted to Odin in Pre berried stripey Opae ula
Not yet, towards the end of the month I'm guessing we will see some eggs.
My other tank has 3 larvae floating around, 2 weeks and they will become baby shrimp

Vpier reacted to Mr. F in Power Sand
I've used Home Depot lava rock under deep substrate before, but I was lucky enough to get a bag of Powersand Special S for free and I'm gonna give it a shot to help with this really steep sloping scape- along with some egg crate. I'll let you know what happens. lol. The "Special" version just has ADA Bacter 100 and Superclear mixed in. I'm using it in hopes that the 6" deep substrate at the back doesn't go anoxic. Definitely wouldn't actually go buy it 'cause its like 10x more expensive than just lava rock and bacter supplements, unless it ends up working unbelievably well.

Vpier reacted to Nubster in Power Sand
Something like this...which is just tumbled lava rock...

Vpier reacted to Nubster in Power Sand
So why not just use lava rock rubble? Certainly it has to be much cheaper than ADA anything.
-
Vpier reacted to DETAquarium in Power Sand
Yes! The name is misleading as it is almost just a bunch of lava rock rubble.

Vpier got a reaction from DETAquarium in Power Sand
Thanks for that clear up. The stuff looks more like gravel/rocks than sand. I was picturing actual fine grade sand. Now I see how it would work. From the picture, 1/3rd of the front will be all soil and then gradually getting thinner as you go towards the back so it will be mostly powersand with a small amount of soil.

Vpier reacted to Tannin Aquatics in Guess what's coming to dinner...?
Do you ever wonder what many of our favorite non-herbivorous aquarium fish species eat in the wild? I mean, what they tend to graze on all day?
Well, interestingly, a lot of what they eat are insects. Yeah, lots and lots of 'em. And a few other things, like fish eggs and Daphnids.
A partial excerpt from rom Walker, in his paper "The Food Spectrum of The Cardinal Tetra (Paracheirodon axelrodi, Charicidae) In Its Natural Habitat" gives us a look at what was found in the gut content analysis of a number of specimens collected in Amazonia: (click to read more)

Vpier got a reaction from DETAquarium in Power Sand
I see, but how does it prevent gas build up? What does it do exactly? You said it was porous but once you cover it up with a layer of substrate how does O2 get to the power sand? The only way I know how to prevent gas build up is with either a UGF , snails like MTS or poking the soil. Please dont take this wrong way, not trying to argue with you, just trying to figure out how this works with another substrate on top of it.

Vpier reacted to Greenteam in Seeding a new filter and tank
You can run new filter on old tanks to help it seed or you can take sponge from old tank and squeeze that mucky buildup onto the new tank.
Just a side bar tip: in your HOB filter I recommend you place Media at the bottom and sponge on the top. Reason is the media will never need a cleaning since the sponge will actually be one catching small particles of waste. So when you go clean the HOB you just take the sponge from the top and squeeze it out but never rinse under sink water.
Also if you have live plants you wont need the active charcoal since the charcoal is taking away all the goodies plants need.

Vpier reacted to sarah in Trade shrimp foods
I have an idea... let me know if you guys think this could work!
I have 3 main foods that I feed my shrimp approximately every other day in a rotation. Of the 3 main foods I use, I use one piece of each per week. Each container has probably well over a hundred pieces, so there is no way I am getting through these within even a couple years!
I was thinking maybe we could set up some sort of exchange where we post what we have in abundance... and we could somehow coordinate to exchange with each other. For example, I have way too much Shrimp King Mineral, Lowkeys Ebi210, Bacter AE, and BorneoWild Frenzy. I also have a ton of food samples laying around unused. Anyone want to work out some trades?

Vpier got a reaction from Soothing Shrimp in Shrimp sees us?
The lack of a brain mystifies me. The have a complex nervous system that functions like a brain yet they feel no pain, weird.
-
Vpier reacted to Soothing Shrimp in Shrimp sees us?
(Best pirate voice.) Aye, be guessin' yer right. :-)
I still find it fascinating that they have no brains, and they don't feel pain. The pain part is probably a good thing considering they lose body parts to predators and such.

Vpier got a reaction from Soothing Shrimp in Shrimp sees us?
Not an expert but shrimps are like insects of the ocean and im guessing their eyesight might be similar to them.
-
Vpier reacted to Soothing Shrimp in Shrimp sees us?
I've noticed on some close up shots recently that our shrimp seem to have compound eyes.
Is this perhaps the way they see us?
