I think we'll aim to have a Christmas in July Secret Santa. It'll be nice to do that in themiddle of th year, and as said- it'll give people a chance to prepare and have some good excitement during that time.
Thanks, Chris. I appreciate you sharing your experience.
My stepdad has offered to put a brace in for me... I showed him this thread and asked if he could do it for me. Now if I can get him to do it before he leaves for Alaska, everything will work out great.
I have my Evolve8 and a large fishbowl on one shelf and so far, so good... crossing my fingers that nothing happens before he can get here. They've been on the shelf now for a little over a month. I've ordered a Truaqua 8.7 gallon that should arrive tomorrow. Won't fill it up until the shelf is fixed. Just gives me more time to figure out the lighting and stuff, right?
I don't think there is one that won't break if you don't unplug it when doing water changes. I solved that problem when I was using heaters by moving them down lower beneath the water change line.
Cobalt aquatics I've heard nothing but praises about, but cost $$$. Their Mini-therms are reasonable though.
I've used titanium heaters, and I like the outside the tank control, but my major complaint is that if your power trips (mine has a lot this winter), it has a bad memory so resets at 80 deg if digital. I have a manual outside remote, and that stayed the same temp naturally, because of a dial. I bought that from Ebay for around $30 I think.
The absolutely best heater I used was truaqua digital heaters. They retain memory after a power trip, but no out of tank remote. No biggie really since once you set it, put it in and forget it. I like the digital read out on the front to let me know things are still working well.
As with any heater I had, I had a cheap suction cup therm on the tank to let me know how hot it actually was. It helps ID problems as soon as possible. Just part of the daily checking routine.
I'm experimenting this year though, and have unplugged all my heaters as of about a month ago.
I like the looks of mystery snails, however after having a few large ones die on me in different tanks and having ammonia spikes, I don't do them anymore. Funny how my opinion of them can change like that.
I like them all.
They never breed out of control for me.
But I also don't often.
Once every 2-3 days
They keep my tank clean, eat left over foods my shrimps don't eat so I never have to take out uneaten foods.
When I feel they are getting out of control, or a population explosion, I play "snail breeder."
I remove as many undesirables as I can, and leave the ones I think are pretty.
I have been getting some very, very pretty rams horns lately by doing this. Bright orange, pink, and "peach opals".
Pond snails are my least favorite, but got some interesting white ones with black spots I call "appaloosas".
It's more fun to go with it than fight it because you will never really get rid of them.
It's official. .. My tanks are being evicted from the kitchen counter. Who knew that someone would actually want to cook in there? It works fine for cooking ramen and goldfish jello!
The plant tanks are going to be taken down and relocated to a shiney new home, and converted to shrimp tanks. Gonna have to get a few more tanks, but if that's what it takes to get some people to stop the shrimp scampi talk... Well you gotta do what you gotta do!
Just thought I'd share stage 1 with you all. I'm sure I going to be asking a lot of questions, cause I want to get this set up right.
And yeah I know the shelves are set up wrong. I wanted to get it attached to the wall, before anyone noticed I wasn't completely leaving the kitchen.
We don't have an off topic area yet, so I had to post here.
I saw this today and thought it was really neat. A $1 microscope has been invented that can magnify 2000x. The hope is that it can be in hospitals all over the world.

I have some hand made 316 stainless steel filter guards!!!
Protect you shrimp babies and fish babies from getting sucked into your filter!!!
Mesh holes aren't as small as other sellers was selling before which made them get clogged every quickly and they aren't as big as a few imported versions which let babies get sucked in.
Specs:
SS - T-316 Stainless steel wire mesh ( higher level of corrosion resistance than that offered by T-304 Stainless Steel Wire Mesh),
Don't buy inferior product that uses 304 SS mesh
Rubber - Marine grade tubing (wont deteriorate),
Don't buy inferior product that has regular tubing and will break down!
Seams - Seams are folded into each other which takes a bit of time to get perfect. Folding the seam won't letting anything get sucked thru the seam part~!!!
Don't buy inferior product that have the seams just lay on each other!
NEW: I'm now making these in two different mesh hole sizes.
The new size has slightly large holes than the my original design.
This is for people who just want the SS filter guard on there filter to catch the small debris that the stock plastic cant catch.
I use these on my betta tanks and farming tanks. Works great!!!!
Not recommended for fish fry/shrimp-let tanks!
(Bigger hole SS filter guard)
This size does make it a bit harder to make so please add $1 to all prices (below) if you want the large holes mesh size.

Shrimp thrive when their water parameters are consistent. Municipalities often vary the source of the water they use during the year which can drastically change the water parameters of your tap water over a short period of time. Additionally tap water contains a lot of impurities which also change based on the source water. It is not uncommon to hear people doing a water changes and suddenly losing most or all of their shrimp due to some unknown change in their tap water.
I recently started using reverse osmosis (RO) water as the starting point for all my tanks. I have always used RO for my soft water species (Caridina species like Crystal Red Shrimp or Tiger Shrimp) but I decided to also start using it for my hard water species (Neocaridinas like Cherry Shrimp). The reason for the switch was so I could better control what is in my water. The process of reverse osmosis removes nearly all contaminates in your water, leaving you with almost pure H2O. While tap water is certainly more convenient, using RO water allows me to create a consistent product for all my tanks that shouldn’t vary over time. Providing consistent water parameters is critical to successful breeding.
You can’t use 100% RO in your tanks without remineralizing it with something. Shrimp need calcium and magnesium and other minerals in the water in order to molt properly. I use Salty Shrimp Bee Shrimp GH+ to remineralize my soft water species. Salty Shrimp also makes a product called Shrimp Mineral GH/KH+ that was designed for Neocaridina’s which I have recently started using as well. Both products are very clean (low TDS increase for the increase in GH or KH) and more economical than the competitors I have tried.

I really like them . Every 6 months I take a pipe cleaner and run it through the small opening in the body and squeeze the sponge ( but not totally clean ) And that's it . Simplicity at its best . And the shrimp love them too . They will cluster on top and on the sides . If you put them in the back corner and put a floater or some Java moss near them they blend surprisingly well . It is Hydor or something like that I get the largest size for 20's and up about $9 . I started with the 2 sponge types cause they were cheap $3.50 shipped I think and that was my budget at the time . But you have to adjust them and clean stuff out of them and just mess with them in General ( and they float as mentioned ) . I wish I would have gotten all hydro's in the beginning
I was actually debating on fishnets or hose. LOL Really. But I figured the media is too small for the holes this time in the fish nets. Ceramic rings may work in them though...or a hairnet.
Thanks for the tip Merth. I actually found some cheaper accidently. I went to Walgreens and I found some for 1.50 and was about to walk away, and then saw on the very bottom shelf they had the little clear plastic bubbles (like in vending machines) with calf high hose for .69 ea. I figured, no cutting, just tie a knot after filling. Cool. So I grabbed them. 2 for $1. Not bad. In black yet.
Just looked in teh tank...no more dead....fingers crossed!
My hobby is neos for the most part, and I always see logos with crs. Neos seem to be neglected or have the unfair connection of being only beginner shrimp. Untrue since experienced shrimpers like them, too!
We did end up using the sponge from the air-driven filter as the HOB prefilter, it fit nicely. We are seeing what appears to be some breeding activity, but no visible berries yet. Have recently counted eight of the original ten (the other two might be hiding). No corpses seen. They are growing and successfully molting.
^^ The shrimp made a mess of the food for the Mysteries. Big lady is my fave and is the biggest shrimp I have. The one shrimp on that right has some orange on his head.
