    Berried Amano

After reading about someone else's amano hatching eggs, and seeing what they look like I was surprised to discover a berried Amano today. Looks like a clump of dirt under the tail. Not sure how far along she is, but I have decided to try rearing some larvae. I have some extra lava rock and I can make a quick quarantine tank next water change for the brackish larvae tank and keep the female with the same water in a fine mesh hatchery like this: https://premiumaquatics.com/products/lees-net-breeder-small-fine.html?gclid=Cj0KEQjw4J-6BRD3h_KIoqijwvkBEiQAfcPiBRG0J8t92n8c_gffN4fP8RRIVvTBqKcBLFWyiH3GFHsaAjTh8P8HAQ
  2. You can make your own ice packs: http://www.themakeyourownzone.com/2013/01/5-ways-to-make-homemade-ice-packs.html Less expensive.
  3. I had to look it up. Is it actually bilateral gynandromorph? If this is true, it would have to be a species with distinct differences between male and female in order to really notice it?
  4. It looks really nice. I want to make a bowl (vase) at work, but I don't want to do the maintenance at work, so they all stay home.
  5. Hi there.  I like number three in this post:

I have some 10" diameter (safe to say 9" interior) cylinder vases from 12" to 20" tall.  Would number three fit inside one of these?

  6. Thanks for the tip, shekmete - I just bought 1 of the last two discounted packs available. I've been eyeing them for a couple of weeks now.
  7. Yeah, no spots like amanos have... Do amanos start out with spots when young?
  8. I'm not sure who was being asked about breeding them. I don't want to deal with the brackish water to transition larvae to to adulthood, so I'm keeping these until they naturally expire in favor of those that can breed in freshwater. I have never seen an Amano scurry on a dry surface myself, but it does sound pretty comical.
  9. It's hard to see the eggs. Maybe that's my problem. I can't see the eggs because they're not brightly colored? I read something about shrimps making U shape with their tails which indicates drawing out eggs and fertilizing them to deposit them on their tails. I see the amanos do this, but never anything else. I'm just curious...
  10. It looks more like amano to me. This is a pretty good shot of an amano. They can start out pretty small, especially if male. Mine hang from the duckweed and swim around much like the neos.
  11. I have a bunch of amanos of different sizes and never see any with berries. Do you have a photo for seeing what it is like?
  12. I have that aquarium and use a sponge filter and outside pump instead. Pump (I have a four port, use with four small tanks and set it on low to med low): http://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/fish/fish-tank-pumps-and-powerheads/fish-tank-air-pumps/petco-air-pump-9902-for-freshwater-and-marine-aquariums Sponge Filters: http://www.amazon.com/XINYOU-XY-2835-Aquarium-Cylinder-Sponge/dp/B005LMQCW2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage The lighting works well.
  13. I found an image online and made it 200%. What I could make out from the graininess is Ingredients: Algae (unknown %), dried egg powder. The percent looks like it could be 80%, but I'm not sure. And then there is the question of whether it is by weight or volume.
  14. Hi there, checking back in on the status of the dark footed purple snails. Any pairing up? Thanks, Jan
  15. Interesting. Trying to gauge when my snails should be mating. I have pairs of blue and magentas, only the gold incas are getting frisky. They're all over an inch, so I'm guessing they're older than 4.5 months. Keep me posted on the possibility of male/female pair. My blue's are very introverted (ha ha), so may be interested in a couple of active ones.
  16. Wow, that is a lot of stuff! Very impressive. I was searching about culling. I have my one tank with painted fire red cherry shrimp. The females are very prolific and a new brood is hatched about every week. The plants are growing incredibly fast and it is such a mess. I need to start culling the PFRS, and am not really sure how to go about it... Any advice?
  17. That is a very interesting observation (blue males mating). By exclusion, purple females for sure then... How old are they now?
  18. I signed up just to ask about dark footed purple snails - would love to buy a mating pair.

    FireReds

Small 5 gallon Fire Red Cherry Shrimps - population increases by probably 1 clutch a week. Will need to thin out soon.
