wyzazz reacted to ShrimpFarm in ShrimpFarm Project
ShrimpFarm Project
Hi guys,
it's high time to show our little project that we're making in Poland to the world. Right now we are trying to establish quite big shrimp farm in which we will be able to keep shrimps and crossbreed to achieve new fenotypes. Right now we have some 19 l, some 27 l and some 60 - 220 l tanks filed with different types of shrimps. We have also developed our own shrimp food and active soil.
You can watch our progress on YT (right now the channel is only in Polish but I'm planning to start posting movies in English version aswell).
YT channel is on: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwFhl2YeofJEUzsfIfW8ULQ
And some of our shrimps in atachment.
I'll try to update this topic as recently as I can.

Good eye aotf!
Certainly, if they were fighting over food or something. Or that particular shrimp could have gotten it stuck on a rock or piece of driftwood or something. Orange-eyed shrimp aren't the most graceful of creatures, they are blind after all. ;0)

As mentioned above, I'm not sure if it's scutariella but it looks close. I'd treat it as almost any other bacterial infection. Quarantine that shrimp and use a salt bath. One TBSP of Aquarium Salt per one cup of tank water, dip the shrimp for 30 seconds. Repeat the next day. That will likely take care of it.

If you take a look at this pic, this is a good representation of what mine look like overall. I believe this pic is of the ones I sent to Ryan at The Shrimp Farm.

Really depends on the tank size, I did 4ml in a 10gal right on top of the algae.

wyzazz got a reaction from ConnorT in Help! Want to start a shrimp tank
Start with Cherries, as mentioned above. Look locally (Craigslist, Facebook) or here on Shrimpspot to purchase shrimp, in my experience the shrimp you get from other hobbyists are not only cheaper but tend to be pretty hardy. There are a lot of us on here that sell cherries and other shrimp.
I keep snails in all my shrimp tanks as well as plants/moss, driftwood & leaf litter. The snails eat leftover food and help to keep the bio-load up, the leaves and driftwood provide a long term food source and grow biofilm, this is the primary food for shrimp. Plants are great for the overall health of your tanks, they remove nitrates and provide shelter and a grazing area for shrimp as well.
All Neocaridina will interbreed with each other, and all Caridinia will interbreed with each other. There are some Caridina (Orange Eyed Blue Tigers/OEBT, there may be more that I am not aware of) that can live in Neocaridina water parameters without any issues. This is the best way to keep a mixed tank IMHO.

It looks like that's his DIY filter, with the gravel acting as the Biological Media.

For anyone that is interested, I've split a 20gal long and a 30gal breeder using corner HMF's. I used a black piece of acrylic siliconed in place to split the tank in both cases. No issues so far.

Yeah, as others have said above: You need RO water remineralized with Salty Shrimp GH+ or something similar, don't use just plain RO or it will kill the shrimp. You really don't want any KH or very minimal KH in the water. You also need a buffering substrate to keep the PH in the correct range. Where are you located? Maybe there is a member close that can take them off your hands and care for them until you get set up for them?
