    Hey Shrimpspot!

I have the great opportunity to test the Shrimpy Daddy product line. This came at the perfect time as my two new shrimp tanks just finished cycling. I decided to test these products on my new Blue Bolt shrimp tank as I separated them out from my original Taiwan Bee colony.

As this Blue Bolt tank just finished cycling I used the guidelines listed on the Shrimpy Daddy website: "Water Restarting Procedure". As the conversion from liters to gallons are almost never whole numbers I did my best to come as close as possible.

    Quick Specs of Tank:
17.1g Mr. Aqua Aquarium Micmol Aqua Mini Color LED Eheim 2213 Filter with Purigen and Biological Media Controsoil "Fine" Black substrate

    Here are my test subjects:

...sorry folks... no photos of the Pinto baby. He's a little shy, a bit excited, and too energetic to for me to take any good photos. He is excitedly exploring his bigger home now that he is inside the main tank. Let's just hope mom and dad are busy inside the breeder box.

So.. since I don't have any photos of the Pinto baby, let me share 3 photos taken with my iPhone earlier this week.

Unless you are using media or substrate from a cycled tank I doubt you are cycled at 10 days. Using filter bombs on brand new tanks and running temps at 86 I can cycle a tank in just about 12-15 days and that is fast. I will always let my tanks run a full 4-6 weeks before introducing shrimp to build biofilm and age the tank a little.

I doubt 5 hours of light is enough, I would run your lights for 8 hours but raise them and or add a diffuser to make the light less intense. I run my LEDs for 10 hours straight but I have all my lights raised up and use multiple diffuser panels. When the plants are established and no algae is growing I remove a panel and monitor for a few weeks then keep going until my plants are growing well and im not getting algae growth. I use to have horrible algae problems running the same lights for 8 hrs with a one hour break. Since I started raising and diffusing plants with algae when added to these tanks will lose the algae on its own.

There is almost no chance for long term cure, may have tried. I did hear one anecdotal account of using malachite green combined with dark that supposedly worked. No one has since repeated it with success.

TDS meter is not that important but hardness tests are very important. If you didnt have ammonia I would say what you are describing could be hardness related. But with the ammonia im sure you are describing suffocation, ammonia burns the gill tissue and makes oxygen exchange impossible causing slow suffocation.

I use this timer as well. It is slightly a pain to program but works well. It does lose time slowly which isnt a big deal, and it has as internal battery that keeps time when the power goes out which mine does occasionally.

SOLD!!!!I have a large amount of coral moss available for $40. + 6. shipping. 100% Algae free but has some duckweed and maybe a small bit of other types of pieces of moss mixed in. If your lucky there may also be a few shrimp in there. I wouldn't be surprised. It's the size of a baseball or slightly larger. The moss in the pic is compact. I accept Paypal as form of payment. I'll also throw in some trident fern for free. Thanks!

Your KH value would have to be zero and use quite a few alder cones to actually change the tank pH.

RyeGuy411 reacted to christinenha in How to Fishless Cycle Using Dr.Tim's Products
The gist of conversations I've had over the last few months with several people (some very recently):

Person: I just got my shrimp a week ago, and they are dying.
Me: How long have you had your tank set up?
Person: [Answer ranging from one week to one month.]
Me: Okay. How did you cycle your tank and what do you have in it?
Person: I have this and that in the tank, and I left the filter on for [a week-a month] so I don't know what's going on.
Me: Okay, but how did you cycle it?
Person: I put bacteria in and left the filter on. [some didn't add bacteria and just had the filter on.]
Me: Did you add some source of ammonia?
Person: Yes. I put in the bacteria.
Me: No, did you put in ammonia with the bacteria? Like fish food or a piece of shrimp or fish or ammonium chloride?
Person: No. I just put in bacteria.
Me: Test your water and let me know how your test goes.
Person: I have an ammonia spike.... How do I have an ammonia spike? The filter's been on. [some people don't have test kits, so their response is, "I don't have a test kit. I don't know."]
Me: Well, let me tell you a little bit about cycling. =)

I was the exact same way when I first started. I had no idea what cycling was or how important it was and thought that if you put the bacteria in and just let the filter run, everything would be a-okay. Well, everything's not a-okay if you've got shrimp dying left and right from ammonia poisoning.

So I'll just leave this here... =)

**Please note that this is a tutorial on how to cycle a tank from scratch. It goes much faster if you use an already seeded filter/substrate, but many people starting out do not have this available. Also, some people prefer a fish-in cycle. I am not one of those people. =)

RyeGuy411 got a reaction from ElevateShrimp in cycling ada soil, have you heard of doing this?
I would think putting it in a bucket and soaking with very hard water and changing daily for a week would accomplish the same thing without breaking down the soil and wasting as much water.
