Han sells stainless steel intake covers that are 100% shrimplet safe. He uses a mesh that is very fine and is safe for the smallest new born shrimps. My shrimp from newborns to adults constantly graze on the intake with no problems. Sponges clog and require way too much maintenance.

CO2 is the only way I know of to lower pH and not kh.

Fluval peat will lower KH and pH.

I would think putting it in a bucket and soaking with very hard water and changing daily for a week would accomplish the same thing without breaking down the soil and wasting as much water.

I also have a HMF in my 20L so im losing about 6 inches of floor space for the filter compartment. But that gave me a thick substrate layer.

You dont need 40 lbs of Controsoil for a 20g. But on the plus side you have substrate for another tank! I use about half to just over half a bag for a 10 and just under a bag for a 20L. That gives you a substrate depth of about 4-8cm.
