If any of you are thinking of going cheap and doing a sterilite sump for your shrimp racks. There are a lot of not so ideal options. It took me a lot of trial and error to find the right container.
Dont get ones with a lot of folds at the sides. They will baloon out when filled with water. Usualy these are the heavy duty models. Like the sterilite ones below:

Also dont get one that has tiny stands that stick out underneath it. The weight of the water will just cause them to break and cause a leak. It happened to the one pictured below. Rubbermaid 40 gallon:

I found this one to be the most ideal for sumps. It has a flat bottom and no folds on the sides. Its also transparent which is nice so you can see the water line. Its the sterilite ultra 29 gal. Target has them.

It helps to keep the lid on to prevent evaporation and support the frame. Dont overfill it either. Mine is currently cycling with ada soil inside. I have a lifegard quiet one 991 as a pump and marinepure 1.5 inch for filter media. Theres also an airstone under the media do provide oxygen to it.

Kel, I think this means that you have a good supply of biofilm to feed them naturally. I know it's cool to see them swarm, but yours aren't doing this because they aren't hungry. They are full and happy already.

There will be not much difference in water flow since our tanks are few inches high, the most important thing you need to do is to clean the sponge regularly to allow water flow, otherwise your sponge filter will act as an air stone. 

We could make this really complicated, and discuss how many traits are coded for by multiple genes, so a simple Punnett square won't adequately predict offspring ratios.

I started out by claiming that my fish and their plants were a hobby to destress from the rabbits (I sideline in rabbit rescue, love 'em but they can really be bad for your blood pressure). Then I wound up rescuing/adopting fish, some of whom were sick. Then I realized that all of my plants were dying. (Look, somehow I'm really talented at killing plants. I plant weeds and they keel over.)
Eventually, I went and got myself a frog to destress from the aquaria.
I think that I should stop trying to get a hobby.

If you're going to get more from the same source, chances are they will be carrying it even if you don't see it right away. If you really plan on wild caught, quarantine, quarantine, quarantine! Go eight weeks on those guys, don't risk your tank.

Ouch, that happened to me once. Went through three bulbs before someone explained that it had to be the fixture (you'd think I would have caught on sooner, but it was second hand and I had no idea how old the first bulb was).

I was thinking about this the other day ... sometimes people will take a bunch of rocks and put them on a windowsill in old tank water to grow algae to feed otocinclus. Then they just rotate the rocks in and out of the tank. There isn't any reason this wouldn't work for shrimp, is there? They would still develop a coating of biofilm.
 
I suppose it would probably still not be sufficient if the quantity of shrimp to be fed is large enough, but at least it would be something else to add to the rotation of food sources, right?

Right now, I have a 5.5 gallon tank with one female betta (has a large hang-on breeder box attempting to grow out moss, but no other livestock). There isn't much tabletop space left, but I was in PetSmart today picking up litter and couldn't resist checking out the options for another one.
a) Top Fin 2.6 gallon cube with lid, LED and internal filter - really cool looking, of course the LED is probably useless, I would almost definitely use a sponge filter instead, and so it's a very pricey plastic box
standard 2.5 gallon tank with clear lid - better price, more flexible, kind of boring
I feel that either of these would be a bit on the small side for a healthy colony of shrimp. However ... Maybe I could move the betta to one of these and redo the 5.5 gallon for shrimp?
Thoughts? Advice? Should I do a bigger tank?

Guys, it's PERFECT!
Look at that, here it is running, and barely a drip of wasted tap water. No frustrating screwing and unscrewing, and the aerator/regular faucet side works just fine! SO much better and so worth the $10.

Just a suggestion but be clean with the titles please. I know there are some younger people on here to. Looks cleaner, in the thread is fine but everyone reads the titles..

Why not post the pictures with no ID and let the members vote?
On another forum I belong to the members who wish to participate have to submit 2 photos of the same thing, one for posting and a similar one with date  etc for the administrator of the comp. to check, but not post. Only the administrator will know the ID of the submitters until the comp is judged. That way you minimise the chance of people voting simply for their friends. 

Can I pay for a get out of jail free card for when I eventually snap and start correcting spelling and punctuation? Just kidding!!

What I'm gonna do is start stockpiling ice packs and a few of the smaller coolers. When I have a bunch I'll try to coordinate with whoever can get them.

Actually, it also depends on if anything other than the swim bladder has been affected. If you don't have a mature liver or kidneys, you're only going to last as long as they do. Can't really tell in animals this size until you see how they do.
They sound like they're doing great, though. I hope they make it and breed!

School has kept me pretty busy with like 40 hours of reading a week on top of clinical skills and anatomy lab >.>
 
But in my free time I like to play video games (bizzard junkie here)....I datamine when I'm super bored....
can't wait for destiny too....for the pc.....pcmasterrace.
I used to like building model cars.....but it's just time consuming and takes a lot of space that I don't have.
 
If eating is a hobby, it's what I would do best.........so I have to exercise to keep my fatass alive.....so I force myself to hit the gym to do cardio....
