chibikaie got a reaction from Duque in Bad idea to change sponge filters?
Just run both at the same time for a while (maybe a month) before you remove the old one. And then keep it so you'll have something for a hospital/quarantine tank on short notice.

chibikaie got a reaction from Lyana in Anyone Use Only Sponge Filters for Bee, Crstal or Tiger Shrimp ?
I love how they insist they're not suggesting that you set up a new tank expressly to test just using a sponge ... and how they are like "it's actually a drawback that they are so cheap to set up, you feel like you can set up too many tanks" - hilarious. Love it.
I'm a big fan of keeping it simple. The more stuff you have that can break, the more WILL break. I don't think I have ever seen a sponge filter break.

Nice! I have given up on amphibians. Rabbits and aquatics ONLY from now on. The rest is too complicated for me!

chibikaie got a reaction from Soothing Shrimp in Marine Pinpoint Calibration questions
I'm reasonably certain the brand doesn't matter.
Definitely get some little cups to use. I almost spilled all of the solution the probe came with, as I realized at the last second that putting it into a shallow food dish was not going to work.

At least you have a sense of humor about it!
Examples why I should not be allowed to name anything: "Unholy Terror" and "Yet Another Bunny"

I enjoy some of what I do. I do feel like a crazy person most of the time, though. I think my boss needs to hire more people. I feel like I have three distinct jobs and I'm expected to cover a fourth and fifth position as the people doing them get time off.
What were we talking about? Oh, tanks. Yeah. I paid my taxes so I am officially broke until next month. If I PM anyone about an order, please yell at me for being financially irresponsible. (This is probably going to backfire in a spectacular fashion when I have a freakout and set up a new shrimp rack next month, isn't it.)

I've done a permanganate bomb (both with and without fish; unlikely to try it with shrimp). Pretty harsh yet still won't kill everything.
To be honest, I am still keeping my fingers crossed that my tanks will thrive this time. It is a gamble as I use tap water. I was much less stressed when I had fish. I knew what I was doing!

chibikaie got a reaction from Crazyfishlady in Azoo battery powered air pump test
^-^
So perhaps I should have clarified - when I said I ran it for 36 hours, it was because after that time, I handed the bucket of fish off to be sent to a pond, and not because the batteries died.

Ugh, just figure it out, build a bunch of extra, and we'll buy them ...

I ran that model for about 36 hours once, so I'll be interested to see how many days you get out of it.

chibikaie got a reaction from Soothing Shrimp in riccia ufo
There are people who go to great lengths to tie riccia to rocks to get that look. Then they have a fit when it grows too much and parts of it break free and float around.

chibikaie got a reaction from colorfan in Plastic Barrel Question
If you are taking the step of using RO water, I would not take chances with putting it in anything that has touched soap. Five gallon containers are cheap enough that I would just buy new ones that have not been used for anything else (and then mark them so no one else uses them - I can't tell you how many buckets I've lost to my parents "borrowing" them and then giving them back covered in *paint*).

chibikaie reacted to Soothing Shrimp in FS: Malawa Shrimp
Malawa Shrimp $1.95 ea (10 for 29.50 shipped)
Pic is of Malawa on a 12" leaf. Often they have tiger stripes, and colors can range from reddish-brown, greyish-black, blue, to greenish-clear. [Please don't ask for specific colors since they all have the same genetics.] Keep in mind, to my knowledge no one has bred a color strain of these yet, so the opportunity is there- especially since these will pretty much outbreed cherries any day!
Here's another picture taken by Mayphly of one of the various looks.
Shipping is a flat $10 to anywhere in the continental US, and covers priority insulated box, and breather bags.

Elodea can grow floating, so substrate is not a concern.
