it is a species from amblystegiaceae, probably calliergon cordifolium (not perfectly sure), red coloration in tissue is comon in this family of mosses and they live always in close relation to water. in my opinion it is tissue coloration, the leaves do not fall down, the moss grows vigurously, it just changes color.

hi there, i am posting here picture with a moss i had in a tank for about 5 months now. it developed interesting with very bright green tipps and brown also more inside. i really like it much, it is kind of fluffy.

sorry for picture quality, the white lines in the pictures are Lemna minor roots

sadly the most interesting red moss that i managed to get, does develop green in tanks. even if it is that gorgeous and lives totally submerged in nature, i realy tried it with co2, very high light, very low light and so on.... it simply wants to grow green. i presume the temperature is to high for it to keep only the red natural coloration.

at this point i can say that for this year the testing of red mosses is over as the most interesting species that i hoped will develop red did not bring the expected results.

so i can say finally that the ones that hope for a real red moss for their tanks should accept for now that only the purple angel is fit, but that this species need to be grown half submersed half emersed, and that it really grows extremely slow. the other "candidates" as mosses did not made it in the hobby (only as regular green mosses).

with these conclusions the "red moss species project" i intended for this year is done (i made documentation research for more than 4 years now about these red mosses) and i will simply focus on the other fissidens species that are still out there.

hi there, i told you i will get a second red moss. here it is, with pictures also from natural environment. i do not know at this point how it will behave in tanks.

it has obviously natural red pigment in tissue. and it lives strictly in water.

Kind regards to all shrimpspot members

new pictures, after almost 2 months of keeping it submerged

it does not need any special requirements, it is really easy to keep even in low tech tanks, close to one inch height.

    hi there

after 4 weeks of testing some red mosses i can see following happenings:

    - about all red mosses started green new endings (i wait for another moss that i recently received, in that case it is not perfectly clear how it will develop), with one exception, one moss has green leaves but red/brown stems.

    - some interesting pellias that were in the same tank growd very nice ( i think these 2 species are pellia gabriniana and pellia endiviifolia)

    - also brachytecium seems to grow nicely and fast.

    - scapania undulata changed from dark red to almost black, lives submerged and has green new endings

    - i tested an undetermined sphagnum species that had some reddish in it, not only some small new ending live, they are obvously new, but the red nice tissue seems to have died.

so, here the pitures from that tank.

hi there, here the second set of such mosses, i try to picture them all, probably there still are a few that have to be pictured. today i managed also i think another fissidens .. i will uptade that separately after i manage to determine it, i presume thatone should be Fissidens bryoides.

moss no 24 is Sphagnum inundatum, the only peatmoss i know living totally submerged.

well, finally i managed to get pictures from the natural environment how this extraordinary moss lives. and as you will see, it develops obviously also submerged, or at least for longer periods it lives in submerged environments (the way i saw it when i first got it)

so, here the pictures (the first ones ever taken in that place)

it is obvious it develops best in waterwalls but also that it lives in submersion (i was not able up untill now to find out exactly these conditions)

water values ph 7, conductivity 10 (ten) microsiemens

there is too little water movement down there at the moss, it would be better more water movement...

Zeolite - manticore is using the German spelling I believe. Its used to absorb ammonia among other things and is present in a lot of activated carbon mixes. Purigen could be starving the plant, moss is on the surface just receiving its nutrients from the water itself. Do the plants that are doing well have roots that have dug into the substrate? I have the same problem growing floaters in my fish tank and my mosses grow at half rate compared to those in my fish tank.
