  1. Has anyone tried one of these traps? And if so, how did you get it to stay on the

floor of the substrate? How does it stay flat down on the substrate and not float

up? Also what did you use for food in the trap?

I could put some cut up hot dogs in it, or piece of raw shrimp, or piece of

turkey that you use for sandwiches, or piece of ham slice? Would any of

    these work?

Do these work with the other detritus worms? and other kinds of worms?

Just trying to get some information on these traps and how to use them, and how

to get them to stay on the floor of the substrate. Any info I can on these.  I would

like to avoid using Fenben or any other chemicals.

I don't have planaria worms, but I want to be prepared in case I do get them.

    Thanks, Doc

  2. What's the use of having ottos, with your shrimp, if they don't eat the worms, the non harmful worms?

You would think the ottos would rid the tank of the d. worms. They are the only fish that is supposed

to be 100% safe with shrimp, but you would think they would eat the worms like a cory cat would.

  3. What do u mean by dosing with trace?

SS and SSS grade price in SG is not significant. Just go for SSS grade. ;)

PRL is rare in SG and the price sold in shops are not worth. Unless you buy from breeder. I know a guy in SG has good PRL, his name is Alvin Chan: http://alvinchan80.blog.fc2.com/

IMO, don't keep CRS and CBS together. They will cross-breed and you get funny color.

Hopefully, your shrimp colony will flourish. Wish you good luck. ;)

Just be aware when you tank is between 2 to 4 months, you will experience shrimp losing color or mysterious death. That is the time when your substrate lost the trace elements and the waste in the water is not leeching enough trace. This is a period when you may need to dose trace.

  4. Louie, I forgot to tell you what kind of LED Light that was. I use the BeamWorks LED Lights on all of my tanks.

I use the 20" on the 10 gallons, and the 48" on the main tank. I hang it 5 inches above the main tank. The

Beamworks led's have the day lights and the blue led night lights that make the tank shimmer when the

blue led's are on. I keep the day lights on 9 hours, the blue led's on for 6 hours, and lights off for 9 hours.

  5. wow, what a difference in the color. You would think it would be the other way around.

Less color when you are young and more color when you are older.

I may now have to rethink about the Panda Loaches, if they lose their color and look

dull as they get older. I wonder how long they retain their cool Panda look, until

they start to lose the color and brilliance?

  6. You can't see them in the photo unless you are looking for them, but there are three goldfish in the tank right now,

while it is cycling. I use Tetra Safe Start +, and Colony to start my tanks, so the fish are just fine. But yeah, I

want to put a couple of Panda Loaches in the tank, and just one of something else that I haven't decided

on yet. That's why I wanted someone to breed a dwarf Discus. That would be cool. I couple of Panda Loaches,

and a Dwarf Turquoise Discus for that tank.  The water parameters are the same for the Discus as for

CRS, CBS, shrimp, except the temp is kept way warmer.

But since there is no such a thing as a Dwarf Discus, I will have to settle on something else and the two

    panda loaches.   lol

  7. Here is my 10 gallon tank, all setup in case of an emergency. If I needed to put all of

the shrimp in this 10 gallon, it is ready to go. So, I have a backup or two now to

go with my 48" Long main shrimp tank. The arch is xmas moss all around the

    arch.

  8. There has got to be a way to reach out and get more members joining. What if you were to put a huge giveaway

on the home page and give it to the new people that signup?  A drawing or something. Entice them to join

and post at least twice, and by doing so they get into the huge giveaway. So the new members are the ones

that win the giveaway, and the senior members can donate to make the giveaway something really good.

I would help and donate some stuff to it.

    Just a thought.

  9. You can see closeups of each section in my journal in my gallery, but I need to take some updated ones.

The thing that is hanging is a floating Moss Ball. I put xmas moss in it and attach small clear fishing line so it

hangs in the middle under the water, so they can't jump off it and go to another section, but they love

climbing on it, and they like the water flow on top. There is always a couple on it every time I look.

  10. Now, that I am done with that room, here is the before shot, and what I started with, and what

it looks like today, and how that side of the room looks like now.

  11. Well you could look at mine. It is a 48" long tank with permanent dividers, with 1/8" slits on the

top and bottom of the dividers for water flow, and fry proof stainless steel mesh over the dividers.

It is custom Acrylic, and I made a glass top for it, as the acrylic one kept bowing on me. But

    the glass top works great.

  12. I did age it and test it every day for a week, and I did not collect from the rain gutter, but I

will filter it going in, and coming out. I'll have to try the activted carbon. The ammonia was

very insignificent at .5, and I can use a good prduct to get rid of even the .5. and use

Bee Shrimp Mineral to get the TDS to 135.

  13. I ran tests on rain water over a one week period. The rain water was run through a sponge filter and that was all. I also let some set and tested it each day for a week.

I get all tests exactly the same as my RO water except, the TDS is 20, and my RO TDS is 4, and

there is .5 ammonia in the rain water. Other than those two differences, the water is exactly the same all across the board as RO water.

I feel like I could use the rain water instead of RO water in my tanks no problem. I live in the mountains, so as long as I run it and colllect it through a filter or two coming in and going out, it is just as good as RO water.

    What do you think?

  14. I use the API Master Kit as well, and also API's Copper, GH, KH, and Phosphate tests. Plus I use the six test - Test strips, ammonia test strips,

and TDS Meter and a PH meter. Seems like the test strips matches the API liquid test every time though.

  15. I use dual sponge filters in all tanks, and two of them in my fish tanks. Plus a Penguin BioWheel 200 HOB

on all tanks too. I use a stainless steel intake cover on my intakes that were made by Han, and they

are fry proof. Plus with the BioWheel 200, there is plenty of room for extra media behind the Penguin Filter,

like BioBalls, K1, xtra filter, peat pellet filters, etc. I have gotten them so that are all super quiet. The water

level has to be just right, but once you get it, then they are very quiet. My air pump make more noise than

the HOB, and my air pumps are pretty quiet.

I also use a Aqua 50 Powerhead with a water polisher filter on it and a small UV Sterilizer. I run both of

those for two or three days a couple times a month in all of my tanks.

I keep my light raised 5" above the tank, and so far like that, plants and moss are doing just fine, and I

don't seem to combat algae as much as I used to. I also have one small otto in each tank and a few

Malaysian Trumpet Snails to keep the substrate clean.
