aquariumlover10
Hey, I am wondering who else has or is planning to set up a saltwater tank? I know taylor has a mantis shrimp tank(which is awesome btw), but I haven't ever seen anyone else with one, once I move I am upgrade current tank and such, then start up a florida biotope reef tank, it will only b 10g, but I am going to get a permit to collect inverts, corals, sub, and fish, heres a link to it http://myfwc.com/fishing/saltwater/recreational/aquarium-species/ Also if anyone has had a sw tank I would love to here about it too

Soothing Shrimp
I'm definitely looking into it for shrimp. I may start with peppermint shrimp to give me a feeling of accomplishment and move from there. They are supposed to be pretty hardy and bred by commercial breeders. Lifespan is 2-3 yrs. My main goal is to figure out an extremely simplistic and ubber cheap sw tank and do it. aquariumlover10

Soothing Shrimp
Here's a link to my favorite write up on a cheap sw set up. It's off the net now, so I had to find it in the internet archive: https://web.archive.org/web/20130911060940/http://www.bestfish.com/ssss.html countryboy12484

aquariumlover10
http://m.instructables.com/id/Inexpensive-Locally-Based-Saltwater-Aquarium/all/ How's that for cheap? You could tweak some thing to make it better but it would end up being like 150 or so total but most thing last forever or at least a long time. aquariumlover10
Actually in a sw tank gravel is the worst possible thing you could ever have, it traps nitrates in it because nothing burrows in gravel, sand stuff burrows in and it is too smal to create bubbles if you press down when forist in tank or do a bb tank which is bare bottom, I personaly like sand though. aquariumlover10
Here's ome links to the best place to getlr in my opinion. http://www.tbsaltwater.com/thepackage/contents.html http://www.tbsaltwater.com/thepackage/organisms.html http://www.tbsaltwater.com/thepackage/package_chart.html http://www.tbsaltwater.com/liverock/index.html http://www.tbsaltwater.com/testimonials/index.html
countryboy12484
I have argonite sand in a 20l thAt i was going to use for Sulawesi shrimp... Seriously thinking of shifting gears and doing this lol Soothing Shrimp
aquariumlover10
Aragonit works Maybe just getting a the package from above link without sand, you just need to tell the guy no sand when you order, also I wouldn't get the cucumber becxause once they die within a few hours I heard they release toxins that kill corals and small inverts and fish. aquariumlover10
Oh is that a 20litre or long? A20g long is a great starter tank.
Soothing Shrimp
Nice link... I think i could swing that set up... Honestly i could scrap my sulawesi tank and just add salt and im good to go... That's what I'm saying. I think many of us have some preconceived idea that sw is hard and expensive. I love the variety of shrimp in the Marine life, and I really think it could be simple and "cheap."
aquariumlover10
Mostpeople on general forums say sw I hard, which it can be, but in a nano or pico you can get the best live rock possible because you don't need a lot, same with inverts and coral you could put a 4 polyp $50 zoa in a 3g and after a month it would fill in alot of room. aquariumlover10
Also if you do a refugium it cultures pods and such so it feeds small micro and macro life.
Elo500
I'm planning on a SW tank. I picked up a biocube from Craigslist 6 months ago but havnt set it up yet. aquariumlover10
Get rock from here www.tbsaltwater.com get the package for your tank size, it comes with all livestock you "NEED" butyou can add other fish, corals, and such. Soothing Shrimp
Personally, I'm going to forgo the live rock. When I set up the tank, I want to know exactly what is in the tank at any given time from day one.
aquariumlover10
Humm, that doesn't really work, because with buying coral, macro algae, a clean up crew, or live foos you vwill get micro and larvae kitchhikers on them, also you will need to let the tank sit and add ammonia for a year for it to completly cycle and delelop coralline algae and and even a hermit crabor snail would die from no algae or anything on the rock. Soothing Shrimp
You may be right, however I'm stubborn. LOL I have to try it my way first to learn.
aquariumlover10
Haha, ok, try and add some reef pods for some support, but you may even get hitchhikers then.
featherblue
It doesnt take a year to cycle a sw nano or pico....you can dry cycle a sw in 3-4 months (all dry bacteria free rock and sand, cycle start with only a small bit of raw seafood). A live rock cycle takes 1 day to 30 days, depending on how cycled the rock is (if its from an existing established tank its like moving a sponge filter over) fresh from the ocean live rock might have a few spikes from due off on the journey. Rock is important in sw...its your filter media in most tanks. If you aren't into hitchhiker problems use dry rock....beware itll take way longer to cycle. And while you could just add salt to a cycled fw tank....ur bacteria will need a slow add to adjust to sw....takes longer to acclimate bacteria from fw to sw than to just cycle a sw setup Im currently running a 72g bowfront mixed reef. Variety of inverts from moving to not, few fish
aquariumlover10
Yeah, I know I was just saying IMO its not the way to do it. Any pics of your tank?
