Soothing Shrimp
Can freshwater filter bacteria be used to jumpstart a sw tank?
countryboy12484
Can freshwater filter bacteria be used to jumpstart a sw tank?good question... I was thinking about that my self
Ron
Prodibio BioDigest is for both. h4n
Soothing Shrimp
That's good to know. Can I use a filter/mulm from a freshwater tank, or will the sw kill the bio growth?
mayphly
Good question. I would think saltwater would kill freshwater bacteria. That's my uneducated / non- google search guess[emoji38]
Ron
Personally I don't think it would work. FWIW, I would just buy some pest free cured live rock from a local reefer to seed your dry rock. I don't trust live rock at LFSs, usually covered in pests. Jadenlea
Great question!
aquariumlover10
NO, it sounds good but convert fw to sw takes longer then just cycling a reg saltwater, but alsi you should se live rock instead of bio medis and only use thefilter for extra space and a refugium. Soothing Shrimp
Ah, but I'm not going to use live rock, remember?
aquariumlover10
Twith biomedia in a sw tank all the micro stuff gets caught in it and it collects phosfates, nitrites, nitrates, and ammonia, it canbe done but its hard. Why not just get a 10g, get 15lbs dry,and 4lbs liverock.
Soothing Shrimp
Because live rock contains unknowns. When I set up my tank, I want to know exactly what it contains.
aquariumlover10
But even if you only add dry rock and shrimp, the shrimp will have larvae of stuff onn them, and that is unknown, so you would technically could only have dryrock and what grows on it, because anything u add with have hitchhikers to some degree. Soothing Shrimp
Who says I'm going to add marine rock? heh
aquariumlover10
What? If u use rock not mant for saltwater tanks and thatisnt like sw rock it won't work out very well.
Soothing Shrimp
Well, like I said. I'm hard headed, but I have other ideas on how to do this. So, either I'll succeed, or I'll fail- but experimentation is one way of gathering knowledge.
aquariumlover10
What rock do u plan to use?
Soothing Shrimp
Don't think I will be using any. My plan is to set it up as much like a freshwater as possible. Live sand is a possibility.
aquariumlover10
Why not at least do a refugium, with no live rock at all I can guarantee u it will not work and everything with die inluss you have at least 1/4lbs per gallon rock. Soothing Shrimp
Like I said. I'm stubborn. However if it doesn't work, I'll consider a refugium.

I dont know about you but I dont usually get live rock from my local reefer. LOL
aquariumlover10
Ok, I would at least try one at first, get a ac 70 and u can mod into a refugium.
julianzh
There are plenty of people that use filter + sand only and success.
aquariumlover10
Yeah but it is way harder for newbs(with sw) and the lr helps with breeding by providny micro organismsnfor the fry.
Soothing Shrimp
And also can be very harmful because of the unknown things that are on lr. While that's not too problematic for fish, shrimp larvae can be eaten by just about anything. My plan is to remove shrimp larvae and place into a kreisel until stabilizing. Full control of food will be from there. aquariumlover10
