Memphis118
Today, I received my Oxydator, and after putting it in for a bit, my PH went from a stable 6.8 to 7.2... I assume it's due to the amount of extra O2 in the tank. Is that bad for the CRS I have? Should I have it removed to keep it at 6.8?
JamesHe
The problem is your substrate, not Oxydator.
JamesHe
How big is your tank? what kind of substrate you're using. Even pH6.8 is not ideal. lower pH6 is better for Bee shrimp.
Memphis118
I am using the U.P aquasoil, that guarantees buffering to 6.5 - 7 http://www.up-aqua.com/00-dm-page/00dm_140-aquasand-big.jpg tank is 30 gallons
JamesHe
I am using the U.P aquasoil, that guarantees buffering to 6.5 - 7 http://www.up-aqua.com/00-dm-page/00dm_140-aquasand-big.jpg tank is 30 gallons This soil is not the ideal one for CRS. You want the pH around 6.0 for CRS.
RyeGuy411
I am using the U.P aquasoil, that guarantees buffering to 6.5 - 7 http://www.up-aqua.com/00-dm-page/00dm_140-aquasand-big.jpg tank is 30 gallons I use the UP Aqua shrimp sand and it does not buffer at all. That label on the bag says pH of 6.5-7, that is the pH of the material itself, the granules. This does not mean it will buffer the water to a pH of 6.5-7. Soothing Shrimp
Gee, I have to respectfully disagree with Rye. I have the UPAqua shrimp sand in 3 tenners thus far, and not only is the ph in the 6's, but my TB and crs/cbs are breeding fine. One of my tanks have had the shrimp sand in it for over two years and it still is working well. Having said that, I have heard that it doesn't work for some people, yet I've never had a problem with it. But yea, I use the shrimp sand, and not the soil. RyeGuy411
Bryce I think they have changed their product or have different batches. I did attempt to contact the manufacturer to get a definitive answer and have not heard anything back yet.
RyeGuy411
The thing with the Shrimp Sand is my pH was 6.8 with just RO and shrimp sand, added some IAL and alder cones and boom pH stays at 6.2-6.4 always. I tried a controlled experiment with RO and just the sand and it zero effect on the waters pH.
Soothing Shrimp
Rye, you may be correct. I don't know the answer. The one from 2 yrs ago did well into the 6's, and after drying and baking it, storing, and using again is in the low 5's. The two new ones are in the 6's too. I hope they answer you, because I'm thinking perhaps you got a bad batch?
