I was always under the impression most of it was on surfaces not the water column? In any event I use Bacter AE with some regularity meaning when I remember. Steve R. Posted February 16, 2015 Report Share Posted February 16, 2015 99% of bacteria are in the soil and on other surfaces. No need to replenish after water changes. Anyway, most bacteria have very short generation times, between 20 minutes to a few hours. A problem after big water changes could be the altered chemistry of the water, pH, minerals, trace elements etc. This could affect the bacteria in your tank. mayphly 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
