raesunrae
Hi All, Can anyone identify what these black specks are on this Blue Velvet Shrimp? Does it look like something is wrong or possibly just a genetic thing? I edited to add another pic of one that looks like he has red spots on his side. I can't say whether they've always been there or not but I don't recall seeing them before. Thank you! TheGardenofEder
I don't think they are blue velvets but instead they sre blue rillis and some just have a little red left sometimes that red turns to black.
Blueangel
I was thinking the same thing maybe they where breed from red rillis. And some have the red coming back through. Maybe those would be culls so they don't breed back with the rest and start the work all over to keep the blue only.
raesunrae
Thank you for your reply. Really? I just got them a couple weeks ago and they were listed as Dark Blue Velvet's..I did notice that one of them had a red toupee and read that since they were derived from red/blue rili's that sometimes they would have red head gear. I didn't see any pics of any that had the black specks and red spots like these two did so it scared me that they had some type of disease. So if I leave them in with the other Blue Velvet's would it hurt? Will they contribute to a stronger or weaker Blue Velvet offspring or am I going to get a wild strain of offspring? I have a couple that are berried now. Would I be able to sell them as Blue Velvet's when I have a big colony? Sorry for all the questions and Thank you for your help. I'm extremely happy to know it's not a disease!
raesunrae
Cull them? Ooh boy..There is no way I could kill them so basically I'm looking at setting up another tank? The whole reason I wanted to do DBV's was because they are suppose to breed true and culling isn't suppose to be needed. I literally just broke down 3 20g tanks and set up one 45g cube specifically for DBV's as all the tanks I had were too much to keep up with due to my job. I do have one 8g EBI going with Sakura's so they can't go in there...I soooo do not want to have to set up another tank after just breaking them down Lol! TheGardenofEder
Grats on the babies if I'm right and you have blue rillis then yes your going to end up with some red rillis. You might get lucky and the babies might have the same tiny bit of red or none at all.
Soothing Shrimp
If garden is correct, you will wind up eventually with BR, BV, RR and BBRR.
Shrimple minded
Just noticed when you mouseover RR, it states Ruby Red (Taiwan Bee).........I believe Soothing was referring to Red Rili.

raesunrae
Thank you everyone! Thank you thegardenofeder for the congrats too! So this isn't really a bad thing then right? I could possibly just have a bigger variety of neo sp. without reverting back to the wild neo? My apologies if that sounded stupid!
TheGardenofEder
No worries about wilds if you don't want to cull your tank will be just fine with all the different rillis in one tank Soothing Shrimp
Soothing Shrimp
Agreed. Since Rili and bv come from the same ancestor, you shouldn't have to worry about wilds.
raesunrae
I can live with that. One last question...Would it help if I added more solid DBV's in order to breed more solid DBV or BV offspring or just let nature take it's course with what I have now? I do have some solid blue ones (pic attached) but I don't see the darker blue coloration as I've seen of other DBV's. I really appreciate everyone's help and advice! TheGardenofEder
More would help give you a darker over all population
