omgfrog
Hello would it be possible to keep shrimp outdoors in southern california? Orange county ca Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Greenteam
I don't know how Cali weather is year round but if it's anything like Florida then it can be done. Seen a few people use the big 20+ gal tubs you get at home depot to make outdoor mini ponds for their cherry shrimp.
Steve R.
You certainly can. You just have to be careful to get them not too hot. A larger water volume will be helpful and no direct sun, unless you keep them in a decently sized pond.
Soothing Shrimp
You may have to look out for predators looking for free meals, and insect larvae as well. (?) EricM and stonedaquarium
stonedaquarium
say you have a controlled environement keeping neos in a 60 gal pond... would you still need filters for that or would a simple sponge filter do? it would be a neat looking setup to have floating plants and a couple of sponge filters scattered for biological filtration, or would the huge water volume be sufficient and what would be the frequency for water changes ? once a week? monthly? just curious
omgfrog
They live! I thought it might be too cold here in cali but the shrimp survived a day so far Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
revolutionhope
I had 20 blue cherry shrimp I bought initially breeding (was supposed to be temporary) in a 40litre with just an air stone and some simple rooted plants growing in gravel under a single 2 foot light. they were fine there was no ammonia or nitrite issue (substrate and plants were brought across from an established tank so I guess there was enough nitrification happening on those surfaces.. love n peace will
Greenteam
This guy lives like 15 mins away from my job and I seen his setup was pretty cool. He has a nice blog about how he did his outdoor cherry shrimp farm lol. http://www.tadege.com/cherryshrimpfarming.htm revolutionhope and stonedaquarium

revolutionhope
how much water volume do u have? is it in the shade? sunk into the ground? im pretty sure extreme heat and also temperature fluctuations are going to be more devastating than the cold. love n peace will
omgfrog
I threw a couple in a frogbit growout bucket. Water volume is under 3 gallons in partial indirect sunlight. No deaths reported thusfar. Nothing running just frogbit and a bucket and shrimp lol Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk revolutionhope
revolutionhope
good luck then :-) i'm sure they will be fine until it gets really hot!
omgfrog
What would be considered too hot? California rarely passes high 90s in summer Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
revolutionhope
water temp of 86 will add a little stress. much above that will def result in deaths. remember that in the sun the temp can become double the ambient temperature so it would def have to be in the shade in summer unless it is a large pond sunk into the ground so far as I know :-) hope that helps love n peace will
