Chiumanfu
A peltier brings heat from one side to another. You have to cool one side before the other will get colder. They are very inefficient and power hungry. Look up IceProbe aquarium chiller, they use TECs to cool but the price is ridiculous.

Soothing Shrimp
Let us all know James. General consensus is it is not worth using, however myths are bountiful in this hobby.

JamesHe
Let us all know James. General consensus is it is not worth using, however myths are bountiful in this hobby. By running the numbers. that doesn't make sense. 1 piece of peltier roughly equals 1/10 horse power, commercial model can cool 20-30 gallon tank. so DIY chiller should do. It's only $2 piece, so it's easy to add more in parallel. How big is your tank?
julianzh
It's only $2 piece, so it's easy to add more in parallel. How big is your tank? only a 3 gallons last summer, no ac but with a window fan, the ice probe won't able to cool it under 80F because my room temp reach almost 90F. if you add more peltier, that mean more fans need to cool the other side and more heat will be released into the room. unless your room constantly has cooler air, adding more won't help since a peltier chiller operation is tied to the surrounding air temperature. a peltier can even freeze water if you can keep the other side really cooled. you can try and let us know the result. i was reading at this few years back. an awesome peltier setup from a guy over at hong kong. his setup can cool 6C degree below ambient. http://www.shine7.com/aquarium/chiller.htm JamesHe

GreenPepper
wooo~~~~ very interesting post. I'm planning to use AC powered fans for my tanks
Vpier
I use the four fan for my 20L tank ,will cool down about 4 degrees. It wont fit a framed tank but I glued a strip of plastic on the back and the fans are attached to it. This coming summer I will add another 4 fans. These might cost about the same or not much more than DIY http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00L54ZY9C?keywords=aquarium%20cooling%20fans&qid=1449890899&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-
