OMG Aquatics
how can you tell the difference between alder cone and pine cone.
Soothing Shrimp
Easy. Since Alder cones are so cheap, just buy alder cones. heh Pine cones are much larger and have sap which you really don't want for your shrimp tank. Alder cones are about the size of a dime/nickle and release tannins to acidify the water and make it harder for bad bacteria to get hold. wicca32
with locally collecting keep in mind most public areas like parts and city streets get sprayed with chemicals so its not good to use those. if you have trees in your back yard the might be ok though. ctaylor3737
Yea I go way back into the woods on private lands, I live in town and they spray for mosquitos so that ruled that out. I go to a place where no one goes other than the occasional hiker. Pretty safe.

Doc4PC2
lol, I use the miniature alder cones from a good source that says they are clean, no pesticides, natural, and I haven't had any issues with them, and the shrimp love them. I use fallen Oak leaves. They actually fall in the Spring, and they are all natural too.
Subtletanks91
Alder cones stay small haha Pine ones get humongous I've seen some the size of pineapples. As long as you get them from a reliable source your ok. I get myne from someone who has private land and collects them from there. No insecticides or chemicals are used on his lands,
