OMG Aquatics
What could be a cause to my fire shrimp unable to successfully molt? They can't finish their complete molt and die. I woke up and saw a shrimp molting. The bottom part was done and still waiting for the head part. After 10 minutes later, it died and I see my other fire reds eating it. My water parameters seem to be fine. pH 7.4 Ammo/Nitrite/Nitrate 0 kH 2 gH 5 TDS
Soothing Shrimp
personally I'd raise your gh to 6+
OMG Aquatics
personally I'd raise your gh to 6+ if I raise my GH over 6, my TDS would be over 200. Is that okay?
Soothing Shrimp
With cherries? Big time yeah. You'll be fine. I used to breed cherries between 300-400 TDS. Just changed TDS this year to under 200. I've received cherries from 1000+ TDS! If you use SS to remin ro, you can stay under 200 without a problem. OMG Aquatics
I use tap water. Currently at 8 gH and TDS of
Soothing Shrimp
That would be fine. Just add a water conditioner to take out any heavy metals or chloromines/chlorines.
OMG Aquatics
Yes I always add prime to the new water before adding it to tank

I am currently working on the schedule for water changes and one issue i am thinking of is MOLTING in adult shrimps.

Hungle64
What would you recommend? Keep in mind i am not an expert! This is what i am using Collard Greens. Cutitng back from high protein food, make shrimp growing too fast that the shell can not keep up with the body expansion.
wicca32
what food are you feeding? alot of things can cause molting issues. if they are getting to much protein it can cause molt issues as well. Hungle64
OMG Aquatics
shield once a week barley 3 times a week grow 2 times a week stout 1 time a week one drip of dance a week
Soothing Shrimp
Wow. That's a lot. Try feeding 3x a week, and not do dance. Dance is supposed to induce molting, and can actually be detrimental if premature molting happens.. snowpetals

Hungle64
monday barley wednesday stout friday grow that sounds good? also does grow really expire after 4 months of opened? IMHO still too much protein. Sorry I already said that!LOL
Soothing Shrimp
As far as expiration- I never really worry about that. Shrimp eat food from the wild that have been decomposing. Bottom feeders. I don't think they are going to care.
OMG Aquatics
IMHO still too much protein. Sorry I already said that!LOL What should I feed then? So sad. Another one died this morning. Died after molting. Not sure if it was successful or not but I see parts of the molt.

I thought it was low gH but I raised it to 8-9 and it's still dying. Would feeding algae wafer be enough calcium? http://www.petco.com/product/105276/TetraVeggie-Algae-Wafers-Extreme.aspx?CoreCat=OnSiteSearch
Soothing Shrimp
Deaths don't stop instantly, unfortunately. It takes time for the minerals to be absorbed.
